35歲的資深處女和子整天關在家中足不出戶。某天，她專心看著網路上的一段女高生明日香跳繩的影片，同時進行素描時，突然發現在這影片裡，出現一名似乎是上班族的男子，他一臉幸福地喝著牛奶、吃著麵包，和子立刻對這名男子充滿好奇。另一方面，與和子同住的妹妹美紗決定和未婚夫同住，和子不得不另尋住處。無家可歸的和子來到了影片中的公園，剛好遇到了那名在影片中跳繩的少女明日香，她向明日香打聽那位男子的消息，這才知道那名男子已經回去靜岡繼承家裡的民宿。聽到這消息的和子打算立刻前往靜岡尋人，不料明日香也緊跟在後……

But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.
