歌舞伎家庭出身的吉野美智代（谷ナオミ 饰）自由生活在传统、古朴的环境氛围之中，她早年分外迷恋《京鹿子娘道成寺》的主角尾形珠三郎（花柳幻舟 饰）。后来她成为江户千代之人形师的续弦，婚后仅仅半年，丈夫便一命归西。美智代自此守身如玉，独自抚养继女宇子（北川たか子 饰），并且继承了丈夫人形制作的手艺。十多年过去，宇子已经出落成漂亮的大姑娘，她和继母亲密无间，没有任何隔阂。 一个意外影响了母女俩的感情。某批发商曾凌辱美智子，当他再次欲行轻薄时偏巧被宇子撞见。宇子误以为母亲将行改嫁，生气地跑出屋子，结果被一位俊朗青年撞伤。这个名叫秀夫（中丸信 饰）的青年正是珠三郎的儿子。美智代沉寂多年的爱火被秀夫重新点燃，她为此在身上刺下《娘道成寺》的图案……
