为了给母亲艾达（安杰丽卡休斯顿 Anjelica Huston 饰）治病，维克托（山姆洛克威尔 Sam Rockwell 饰）想出了一个损招，在高级餐厅里，他做出被食物噎住的假象，以此赚取他人的同情。可即便是这样，维克托依然无法负担母亲高额的治疗费用，此时，一个名叫佩吉（凯莉麦克唐纳 Kelly Macdonald 饰）女人找到了他。 佩吉自称是负责照顾艾达的护士，她告诉维克托，有一种新兴的治疗方式可以治愈艾达的病痛，可这种疗法需要维克托提供含有他基因的新生儿脐带血，让维克托震惊的是，佩吉竟然提出愿意为此而怀上维克托的孩子。没想到，维克托的无法勃起让这个看似天衣无缝的计划遭遇了失败，与此同时，艾达和佩吉各自隐藏的秘密也逐渐的浮出了水面。
